A file hosting service stores your files online so you can reach them from any device, share them with others and recover them after a mistake or a broken laptop. Desktop clients keep chosen folders in sync, mobile apps upload photos automatically, and versioning lets you go back to an earlier copy. Shared folders and links cover the collaboration side.
Whole working lives end up in cloud storage: tax records, contracts, family photos. pCloud, Filen and Koofr are operated from Europe, so your files rest under EU data protection law instead of being reachable through US legislation such as the CLOUD Act. Before committing to a European file hosting service, test the bulk download path, because storage is easy to fill and awkward to empty.

Proton Drive is a cloud storage service built for privacy by the Swiss company Proton, the maker of Proton Mail, Proton Calendar and Proton VPN. Files are end-to-end encrypted, so only the owner and invited collaborators can read them, and shared links can be given a password, an expiry date and specific permissions.
