About eu-alt
A directory of European alternatives, built to be found.
eu-alt lists software and online services made by companies based in the European Union, the European Economic Area and the European Free Trade Association, sorted by what they replace. Email providers, cloud storage, team chat, home automation, payments, hosting: if you use it every day, there is a European company that makes it.
Every listing shows where the company is headquartered, whether customer data is hosted in Europe, whether there is a free plan and whether the code is open source. Open source projects that anyone can host are listed too, marked as such, because a service you run yourself is the strongest form of independence there is.
Why it matters: European law (the GDPR, the Data Act, NIS2) gives people and companies rights over their data that only hold up when the provider is actually within reach of European courts. A provider seated in Europe, with servers in Europe, answers to those rules and not to a foreign cloud act.
The list of services started from the public directory at european-alternatives.eu, an independent Austrian project. eu-alt rewrites every description in its own words in four languages, adds categories such as home automation and visual programming, and keeps its own picks: Proton for mail, RUAL for visual programming, Homey for the smart home and mssgs for chat.
eu-alt is published from the Netherlands and reachable as eu-alt.eu, eu-alt.nl, eu-alt.de, eu-alt.be and eu-alt.fr. Each country domain shows the site in its own language. Suggestions go through the contribute form; every one of them is checked by hand before it appears.
