European alternatives to Gmail

Gmail is Google's email service, free for personal accounts and sold to organisations as part of Google Workspace. It combines large storage with fast search, spam filtering, labels and filters, and it works in the browser as well as over IMAP and through mobile apps. For many people it is also the account that signs them in to a long list of other services.

Mail is the archive that holds invoices, medical letters, password resets and years of correspondence, and it is the recovery route to most other accounts, so where it is stored is a decision worth making deliberately. A European email provider keeps that archive under EU or EFTA law. Proton Mail and Tuta Mail focus on encrypted mailboxes, Posteo and mailbox offer straightforward paid mail, and Infomaniak kMail comes with a broader set of workplace services.
