A hypervisor runs several virtual machines on one physical server, giving each its own CPU shares, memory, storage and network interfaces. It is the foundation under most data centres and private clouds: workloads are consolidated onto fewer machines, snapshots make rollback quick, and live migration moves a running VM to other hardware. Clustering and shared storage add high availability on top.
Licensing shocks in this market have pushed a lot of teams to look again at who controls their virtualisation layer. Proxmox VE, Vates VMS and SUSE Virtualization are developed by European companies and built on open source, so the code and the support contract come from inside the EU and EEA. A European alternative for virtualisation also reduces the risk of a sudden change in terms.
