Video conferencing software connects two or more people over audio and video, with screen sharing, chat, recording and often breakout rooms. Browser based tools need no installation, which matters when you invite people outside your organisation. Around the call sit scheduling links, waiting rooms, dial in numbers and, increasingly, transcripts and automatic notes.
Meetings are where the unwritten parts of a business get discussed, and recordings and transcripts turn them into stored data. OpenTalk, alfaview, Digital Samba and Infomaniak kMeet run on European infrastructure, and Nextcloud Talk can be self hosted. Public bodies and schools in particular tend to need a European alternative to Zoom, since their procurement rules ask where the media servers stand.

OpenTalk is video conferencing software from Germany. OpenTalk GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary of Heinlein Support GmbH within the four-brand Heinlein Group, which has more than 150 employees and also runs mailbox.org. It has break-out rooms, voting and shared moderation for larger meetings and workshops.
