Google Cloud Storage is the object storage service of Google Cloud Platform. Files go into buckets and are served over HTTP, with storage classes from frequently accessed down to archive, lifecycle rules that move or delete objects over time, versioning, and access control tied into the platform's identity system. It is the usual landing place for backups, media and data sets in a GCP project.

Buckets fill up with material you would rather account for precisely, and a US cloud provider brings the CLOUD Act and transfer documentation into every data protection review. A European alternative to Google Cloud Storage keeps those objects with an EU or EFTA supplier, usually behind an S3 compatible endpoint that existing tools already speak. Most European object storage is S3 compatible rather than compatible with Google's own API, so your client configuration changes. Tools such as rclone speak both, which makes them a practical bridge during a move.

Are there archive tiers for long term data?
