Contabo Object Storage

S3 compatible object storage from Germany

GermanyEU Non-European controlledHigh non-EU dependency

Scope verdict

Non-European controlled

Contabo has a German headquarters, but KKR in the United States holds the majority stake. EU data location alone does not make it European controlled.

How we classify services

Operational dependency warning

Relies heavily on non-European providers

Current public evidence shows 3 non-European infrastructure or email dependencies across 3 providers: Cloudflare, Contabo / KKR, Microsoft. The reviewed operational path is therefore not entirely European.

Review dependencies ↓

Contabo Object Storage is the S3 compatible storage service of the German hoster Contabo. Because it follows the S3 API, backup tools, libraries and applications written for Amazon S3 work with it directly. The virtual private servers of Contabo are a separate product.

The service is billed by a German company, but Contabo's majority owner is US investment firm KKR. Storage location can be selected separately, which does not change the provider's ultimate control.

Pricing

Storage is billed per 250 GB per month, starting at 1.99 euro. Data traffic is not charged.

Data and operations

Infrastructure and email path

Verified operational dependencies, shown separately from ownership and from the service's core data hosting.

Public website

Cloudflare

Non-European provider
Observed
A 104.20.10.66, 104.20.11.66 · AS13335

Why this matters

Public DNS routes website visits through Cloudflare. Visitor IP addresses and request metadata can reach this non-European provider; this does not identify the core service's data location.

Incoming business email

Microsoft 365

Non-European provider
Observed
MX 10 contabo-com.mail.protection.outlook.com

Why this matters

Published MX records route incoming business email through Microsoft 365. Correspondent details and message content can therefore enter this non-European provider's systems; MX does not reveal the configured storage region.

Authorised outbound email

Contabo / KKR

Non-European provider
Observed
SPF spf.contabo.com

Why this matters

This domain authorises Contabo / KKR to send email. If active, recipient details and message content can be processed by this non-European provider. SPF does not reveal its configured storage region.

Public DNS records identify visible providers and routes, not every backend location or private data-region setting.
