A version control service hosts your Git repositories and the work that grows around them: branches, merge requests, code review, issue tracking and releases. Most include continuous integration and delivery, so tests run on every push and deployments follow from the same place. For many teams it holds not just the code but the project history and planning.
Source code is among the assets a company can least afford to lose, and CI runners often hold deployment keys as well. Codeberg, Forgejo and GitLab are European, and Forgejo and GitLab can be self hosted. Git itself is distributed, so a European alternative to GitHub takes the repositories easily; the parts worth planning are issues, pipelines and anything wired to proprietary actions.
