European office suites
Desktop documents, spreadsheets and slides from Europe
Replaces: Microsoft Office
An office suite is the desktop set of tools for writing documents, building spreadsheets and putting together presentations, installed on your machine and working offline. Files live on your own disk, so nothing depends on a connection or a subscription server. This category covers desktop suites; browser based editing with live collaboration is listed under document collaboration services.
Document formats are the real lock-in in this market, more than the software itself. LibreOffice, SoftMaker Office NX and Ashampoo Office come from European projects and companies, and they work with the OpenDocument format alongside the common Microsoft ones. A European alternative to Microsoft Office also keeps your documents off any vendor cloud, since everything stays on the machine unless you choose otherwise.
LibreOffice
Free open source office suite from Germany
LibreOffice is an office suite from The Document Foundation, a non-profit based in Germany. It includes Writer for text, Calc for spreadsheets, Impress for presentations, Draw for vector graphics, Base for databases and Math for formulas. Files are stored in the OpenDocument format, and the Microsoft Office formats can be read and written as well.
