Running your own instance controls the server and its logs, but does not create an independent web index. Queries still go to the upstream engines enabled by the operator, so those dependencies and the privacy policy of any public instance remain important.
The software is free and open source. A self-hosted instance still needs server capacity.

Why this matters
Public DNS routes website visits through GitHub Pages / Microsoft. Visitor IP addresses and request metadata can reach this non-European provider; this does not identify the core service's data location.
