A web component goes into your page and talks to a server that issues the challenges, and ready made implementations exist for WordPress and for frameworks such as Ruby on Rails and Laravel. It uses no cookies, fingerprints or trackers and is released under the MIT licence.
Self-hosting makes ALTCHA a European alternative to Google reCAPTCHA that keeps visitor data on your own infrastructure. ALTCHA also runs an API, but that endpoint is not hosted in Europe. It suits developers who can operate the challenge server themselves.
