European alternatives to GoDaddy

Register and manage domains through EU registrars

Browse the category: Domain name registrars · Cloud computing platforms

GoDaddy is a domain name registrar and web hosting company from the United States, and one of the larger registrars in the world. Alongside registering and renewing domains it sells hosting, website builders, mailboxes, certificates and a marketplace for buying names that are already taken. Many people meet it simply because it turned up first when they searched for a domain.

A domain is the anchor of your online identity: lose control of it and mail, website and logins go with it, which is why the registrar, its jurisdiction and its transfer process deserve attention. A European alternative to GoDaddy gives you a registrar contracting under EU or EFTA law with support in your own time zone. OVHcloud Domains and IONOS domains combine registration with hosting, netim and Joker.com concentrate on domain management across many extensions.

Questions

How do I transfer a domain away from GoDaddy?

You unlock the domain, request the authorisation code, and start the transfer at the new registrar, which the current registrar then confirms. netim, Joker.com and Infomaniak Domains each describe the steps and the timing on their own sites.

Will my website go down during a transfer?

A registrar transfer does not change your DNS records by itself, so a site stays up as long as the zone is preserved. Copy the existing records to the new provider before you switch nameservers.

Can I get hosting from the same provider?

Yes: OVHcloud and Infomaniak Public Cloud offer hosting and cloud services alongside domain registration. That keeps domains, servers and invoices with one European supplier.
