Why it exists
Lists of "European alternatives" are everywhere, and most stop at the address in the legal notice. That address says where a company is registered, not who decides what it does. A subsidiary in Amsterdam or Munich can be steered by a parent in California, and the difference matters when the question is who can be compelled to hand over your data, or who decides to raise the price.
So we built the register the other way round: start from ownership, follow it to the end, show the sources, and recommend only what holds up.
Where this site runs
We hold eu-alt to the same test as the register. The site and its DNS run on servers in BIT's data centre in Ede, in the Netherlands. Pages set no cookies, and the browser is told to load nothing from anyone else, so there are no trackers and no outside fonts, scripts or images. Messages from the contribute form reach the editors on servers in the same data centre.
Open data
The register is published under CC BY 4.0: reuse it for anything, with attribution to eu-alt.eu. Download it as JSON. Product names and logos belong to their owners.
Contact
Suggestions, corrections and questions go through the contribute form. It reaches the editors directly.
